Elias and Anna (Griffeth) Vanscoy

Mr. and Mrs. Griffith are the parents of seven children: Anna B. gave her hand in marriage to Elias Van Scoy, of Logan county, Colorado, by whom she has four children. U. Grant, who was born May 7, 1868, died January 20, 1907. Isaac, born on the 5th of September, 1869, is a well-to-do farmer who is married and has three children, David A., Winifred and Hester. Jerome is represented elsewhere in this work. David T., whose birth occurred on the 11th of July, 1879, is engaged in the implement business at Van Meter, Iowa. Linnie E., born November 11, 1880, passed away February 4, 1890. Robert S. was born on the 16th of October, 1888. Mr. Griffith is identified with the republican party and has always been as true to the best interest of his country in times of peace as he was when he led his command upon the battlefields of the south. None begrudges him the comptence and the leisure which are now his, as they were won by industry and sound judgement.

Winterset Madisonian, Winterset, Iowa January 12, 1916 DAVID GRIFFITH

David Griffith was born in Holmes County, Ohio, April 15, 1841, and died January 9, 1916, aged 74 years, 8 months and 24 days.
At the age of 20 he enlisted in Co. C. 13th Infantry, was tansferred to Co. D. 11th Ohio Volunteers. He held office of first Lieutenant with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was mustered out July 3, 1865, and the same year came to Iowa.
On March 4, 1866, he was married to Miss Hester E. Miller. To this union seven children were born, five of whom are still living. Those living are Anna Boll, Isaac, Davit T., Robert S. and Jerome. Those who have died are Ulysses and Lennie E.
He united with the M. E. church many years ago, but his deafness kept him from regular attendance in the past few years. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. M. Cable, and the remains were laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.

Death of Mrs. David Griffith - Mrs. David A. Griffith, a resident of Madison County since 1870, died at the home of her son, Robert, east of town, Saturday, August 6th, 1932 at the age of eighty-four years. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and were conducted by the Rev. W. C. Porter of the United Presbyterian Church, in the absence of the Methodist pastor, Rev. A. P. Keast. Mrs. Griffith, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Miller, was born in Brown County, Ohio, December 27, 1847 and came to Jefferson County, Iowa, in 1865. She married David A. Griffith on March 4, 1866 and to this union were born 7 children, five of whom are now living. They moved to Madison County in 1870 and made their home on a farm in Douglas Township. They later moved to Winterset. Mr. Griffith died on January 9, 1916 and for five years a granddaughter, Hester Griffith, stayed with Mrs. Griffith. She then moved to the home of her son, Robert, where she lived until her death. In addition to her son, Robert, she leaves a brother, Will Miller, of Murray, two other sons, David, of Des Moines and Jerome, of Winterset and two daughters, Mrs C. E. Wright, of Winterset and Anna VanScoy, of Portland, Oregon. There are also nineteen grandchldren and fifteen great-grandchildren. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church of Winterset and for thirty-nine years, belonged to the Worthington Church. Jack, Dale, Ray and Gyle Griffin and Archie and Jerome Wright, all grandchildren, served as pallbearers. - The Winterset Madisonian - August 11, 1932

In 1900 Madison County, Iowa, Elias Vanscoy born October 1865 in Iowa, married seven years to Anna Dec 1866, have Hester March 1899 and Sanford Sept 1895. She said she's had three kids, all living. One of them must be Eva - aughter of Anna and Frank Cork.

Charles E. Wright, life-time resident of Madison county, died last Thursday, March 9, 1967, at his home in Winterset. He was 97 years of age.
Mr. Wright was born at Winterset Feb. 1, 1870. His early life was spent in farming, but for 27 years he served as custodian of the Winterset city park.
He was married here March 12, 1899, to Eva Griffith, who survives him. He also leaves two sons, E. A. Wright of Pueblo, Colo., and Jerome Wright of Winterset; and a daughter, Mrs. Fern Breeding of Winterset.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Wilson Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. John Fink, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. "

Mrs. Eva E. Wright of Winterset, a life-time resident of Madison county, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1969 at a Des Moines hospital. She was 85 years of age.
Mrs. Wright was born in Madison county Feb. 4, 1883, and lived most of her life in Winterset. She was married to Charles E. Wright, who preceded her in death, in March 1967.
She was a member of the First United Presbyterian church of Winterset.
Surviving are three children, Edward A. Wright of Pueblo, Colo., Jerome Wright of Winterset, and Mrs. Fern Breeding of Winterset.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Wilson Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. John E. Fink, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. "

In 1910 Logan County, Elias Vanscoy is 42, born in Iowa, with Anna 43 Iowa. Sanford 19, Hester 12, and Bettie 5 were born in Iowa, Archibald 1 in COlorado.

Elias claimed a quarter in 23, 6N 51W in 1913.

November 16, 1917 "Mrs. Belle VanScoy had fifteen of Kelley and town friends visiting with her Sunday. The party wree looking for locations."

Annabelle Vanscoy died in Portland Oregon April 26, 1933.
She's buried in Portland # 110656946 "April 26, Annabelle, aged 63 years, beloved wife of Elias, mother of Sanford E., Robert A., Hester E., Retta E. and Mrs. Belle McDaniel, city; also 3 brothers and 1 sister, David, Jerome, Robert Griffith and Eva Wright, Wintersett, Ia.; 1 grandchild, Viola. "
Elias L. VanScoy 1866-1944 is also buried in Portland, # 59361088.

In January 1923 the Merry Minglers were to meet at the home of MRs. GOldie VanScoy in Otis, Colorado.

July 1923 "Mrs. Goldie VanScoy of Otis, having returned home from her visit to her former home in Missouri, will entertain the Sunshine Club this week."

The death of Mrs. Eli Wright of near Winterset occurred at the state hospital in Iowa City, where she had been taken for treatment several weeks ago, on December 9. Most of her life, following her marriage, had been spent on a farm two and one-half miles south of Winterset. She was 77 years of age.
Mrs. Wright was born as Addie Vanschoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Vanschoy, at Brooklyn, Iowa, on August 8, 1857. She married Eli Wright in Winterset on July 10, 1873. They were the parents of 11 children, four dying in infancy, and three others later. Two nephews and several grandchildren also found a home with them. She united with the church at a revival meeting about 30 years ago and was baptized in Middle River.
Survivors include her aged husband; three sons, Joe Wright of Waterloo, and Jesse L. Wright and Floyd Wright of Winterset; a daughter, Mrs. Daisy Beem of Winterset, 26 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; a brother, Elias Vanschoy of Oregon; and a sister, Mrs. Hattie Jones of Indianola.
Funeral services were held from the Tidrick Funeral home on December 11 in charge of the Rev. W. W. Bentzinger of the Methodist church. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
