Erma Unity (Mathews) Melvin, 96, of Haxtun, passed away March 5, 2006, at the Haxtun Hospital of natural causes. She was born October 5, 1907 in Fleming, the daughter of Leonard and Bell Mathews.
Erma attended Pumpkin Vine and New Haven schools. She graduated from New Haven in 1927. She met her husband Walter Melvin (deceased March 7, 2002) when they were toddlers. The two families moved away and they were reunited as students while attending New Haven High School.
While in high school, Erma was quite an athlete. She loved basketball and was a star player even after she was married. Walter and Erma's dates revolved around her basketball schedule. They were married February 26, 1929 at the Haxtun United Methodist Church. The couple lived with relatives until they purchased land in the Lone Star community. The droughts and depression drove them to another farm in Daily, where they saved enough money to purchase a combine. They earned a living for the next 50 years in Willard, Montana.
Erma was talented in sewing, painting, crafting, knitting and quilting. She traveled to craft shows and exhibited her talent with her friends for many years.
In Montana, Erma raised a garden and loved flowers. She liked Montana where she could fish in the creek that ran through their property, see deer and walk in the brisk air. In earlier years, she helped harvest by driving truck and could drive combine if needed. She also cooked for the help.
Walter and Erma purchased a home in Haxtun and lived there for the winter months while living in Montana in the spring and summer. The couple retired in Haxtun, where in 2002 they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. When interviewed by the paper on their last anniversary, Erma stated, "We never had children of our own. When we should have had kids, we were too poor. When we could have kids, I was too damned old."
As Erma's eyesight failed, it limited her activities. She remained at home as long as possible. She listened to tapes and did some knitting and hardly ever complained.
Survivors include her brother-in-law Reves Melvin and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, siblings and parents preceded her in death.
