About your Volunteer Coordinator

My name is Kristina Corey Fuiks* and I am the current volunteer coordinator for Otero County Colorado GenWeb.

I first became interested in genealogy when my grandmother's family had a family reunion in 1996. Somehow my grandmother, mother and I became tasked with coordination activities and in the end, the documentation of the family tree fell to me. That was the start of something that I have now been doing off and on for the last ten years.

A lot of my work had centered on my grandmother's family, her mother and her mother's father Jose Ramon Sanchez (31 AUG 1860-18 SEP 1924). Much of my family's activities seem to center around Huerfano, Pueblo and Otero counties. I learned that not only am I a native of Colorado, I am proud to announce that I am a fifth generation Colorado native! I am slowly working on filling in the information about other ancestors and decedents. I use a number of different resources including online and traditional methods such as libraries and family documents.

What has brought me to Otero is my grandfather, Albert (1929 - 1988). His story brings me here, and it is a mystery that still needs to be sorted out. Part of this mystery includes learning what his birth name was, his registration in the army and about his half siblings. As soon as I have confirmed his information, I will post some information about him and what I have learned about him.

As for me, I am employed full time, am finally finishing my college degree and looking to start a family of my own with my husband. I think it's because we are looking to start a family that I am compelled to keep looking and researching, travel to cemeteries and spend days at libraries. I hope that out of my research and care of this site that I could give back to a community that has been there for me.

* Many people ask about my last name. It is pronounced (FEW-ks) and is an alternative spelling of Fuchs. My husband's family can be traced back to Poland around the year 1830. I was lucky to marry into such a unique and distinct surmane.
